Since 1973, The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has sought to bring awareness to our nutritional habits, first with a National Nutrition Week. Then in 1980 it was expanded to all of March as National Nutrition Month with the goal of educating and informing people about the importance of developing good eating and exercising habits, as well as making informed food choices.
For many of us, it was only a short two months ago that we made our New Year’s Resolution, once again, to lose weight this year and adapt healthier eating habits. At Premier MD and MedSpa22, we are focused on preventative health care, and we are here to help you keep that resolution. How many times have you gone to your primary care physician and been told you need to lose some weight to be in optimal health? Yet, has your doctor given you an actual weight loss plan that will work? No, not usually. They will merely tell you the basics and send you on your way.
As concierge physicians, we take the time to really help you get your health to where it should optimally be, and that includes your weight. When you start our weight loss program, we will recommend having several tests done. We will start with a body composition test to determine how much of your body is made up of fat. We use state of the art equipment to check your metabolic rate and see how your metabolism is functioning.
Hormone imbalance can also be a huge factor in regards to your weight. We highly recommend checking your hormone levels because a hypoactive (underactive) thyroid will cause a slow metabolism and treating it can help improve your ability to lose weight. However, it doesn’t quite stop there. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are all hormones that cause weight gain when they are out of balance. If your levels are off, this could be playing a major role in stalling your success. Luckily, at Premier MD Care we’re well versed in treating hormone imbalances and getting your levels under control so that your whole body functions better overall. This will not only help you lose weight, but also help keep it off in the long run.
Once all your testing is complete, we can finally see the big picture of your health and then effectively create a customized and structured health plan that works for you and will have you seeing results week after week. We strongly believe one of the healthiest diets out there is the Nutritarian diet, pioneered by Dr. Joel Fuhrman, a board-certified physician, world renowned for his nutritional expertise in creating this specific diet. Our weight loss program is not designed to leave you feeling deprived and you will not be tediously counting calories. This nutritional plan was created to help people reverse chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease, as well as help people overcome food addiction.
The Nutritarian diet is made up primarily of vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains, and is a plant-based, nutrient dense way of eating, which focuses on supplying the body with both macronutrients, such as protein and carbohydrates, and micronutrients, such as minerals and vitamins. You have to eat more micronutrients and less macronutrients (calories) for permanent weight loss and to reverse diseases. The key to having an optimal weight for your height is to eat food with a high proportion of nutrients to calories. One of the best things about the Nutritarian diet is that it allows you to eat until you feel full! So you will never feel deprived or hungry again, but you also won’t overeat.
We recommend taking some vitamin supplements such as vitamin B12 injections, vitamin D3, Zinc and DHA to maximize your weight loss results. And while we will be giving you a really healthy diet plan as the focus, if necessary, we can provide medications to help control food cravings in the initial stages of the program. As your primary care physicians, we will, of course, monitor you closely while you are on the medication to ensure your safety.
